Can Adults Learn To Swim
Posted by admin on Saturday Feb 18, 2012 Under Children

what is the best way for an adult to lean how to ride a bike or swim?
Is there a way that is not embarassing for a thirty something woman to learn to swim or ride a bike? Who can I trust? Any insight would be appreciated.
Don’t be embarassed! A lot of people have grown up without that.
Listen to me when I tell you that you should take a great deal of pride in the fact that you are stepping up now. Not easy to admit, and you are a warrior!
There are a lot of places to take swimming classes. Local YMCA/YWCA, city-sponsored classes, and other oppportunities are out there. Swallow your pride and ask. You’ll be suprised.
For biking, your best bet is a friend you can trust. Or, a young person you know just might be honored if you confided in them your problem.
As an adult, balance will come easy for you. You can sit down, straddle a bike and coast without peddling. In time, with little effort you can pick up your feet and peddle. It’s easier than you think.
Tell us more, and maybe we can steer you in the right direction.

The Adults $9.99 In her ruefully funny and wickedly perceptive debut novel, Alison Espach deftly dissects matters of the heart and captures the lives of children and adults as they come to terms with life, death, and love. At the center of this affluent suburban universe is Emily Vidal, a smart and snarky teenager, who gets involved in a suspect relationship with one of the adults after witnessing a suicide in her neighborhood. Among the cast of unforgettable characters is Emily’s father, whose fiftieth birthday party has the adults descending upon the Vidal’s patio; her mother, who has orchestrated the elaborate party even though she and her husband are getting a divorce; and an assortment of eccentric neighbors, high school teachers, and teenagers who teem with anxiety and sexuality and an unbridled desire to be noticed, and ultimately loved. An irresistible chronicle of a modern young woman’s struggle to grow up, The Adults lays bare—in perfect pitch—a world where an adult and a child can so dangerously be mistaken for the same exact thing. |

Planning to Learn $39.99 Late intervention often means that young people on the autism spectrum appear to act on impulse, seem disorganized, or fail to learn from past experiences. In this practical, effective resource, the authors share tried and tested techniques for creating and using a personal planner to help individuals on the autism spectrum to develop independence. Planning to Learn is split into three parts. The first part guides adults in helping young people to make sense of the world and to develop and practise coping strategies for any given situation. The authors also explain how simple visual and verbal cues can help people to cope successfully in stressful situations. The second part provides worksheets for the young person to complete to learn how to use plans in different situations, for example staying calm when waiting for a doctor, or coping with a change in the school timetable. Each individual makes a unique planner with procedures to refer to, such as responding to pressure, calming down, being organised, and being around people. The third part includes useful cards, schedules and plans for photocopying and including in the planner. This illustrated photocopiable workbook is packed with guidance, support and helpful notes for those new to, or experienced in, working with children and young people with ASD. It can be used within educational and community settings or at home. |

Interventions, Effects, and Outcomes in Occupational Therapy: Adults and Older Adults $62.94 Occupational therapists are expected to maintain their knowledge of best practice by independently keeping up to date on the latest research. With "Interventions, Effects, and Outcomes in Occupational Therapy: Adults and Older Adults," Drs. Mary Law and Mary Ann McColl have assembled the evidence for effectiveness of occupational therapy for adults and older adults. "Interventions, Effects, and Outcomes in Occupational Therapy "brings together the latest published peer-reviewed literature, conceptual approaches, outcome measures, and intervention approaches to address the three main areas by: – Identifying a finite set of interventions which occupational therapists deliver most often, and providing details of those intervention approaches – Identifying where the research evidence shows that occupational therapists can achieve specific positive effects as a result of those interventions – Identifying the outcome measures most commonly and reliably used by researchers in occupational therapy to demonstrate the effects of interventions Drs. Mary Law and Mary Ann McColl have comprehensively reviewed all of the intervention effectiveness literature for occupational therapy provided for adults. The material reviewed crosses all diagnostic categories and areas of practice for adults and older adults. Analysis of over 500 research studies and systematic reviews form the basis for this book. Who will benefit from the text: – Occupational therapy students will learn about the most effective occupational therapy interventions for adults and older adults, and how to measure outcomes after these interventions. – Clinicians will be able to identify the practices for which most evidence exists of effectiveness. – Researchers will be provided with a synthesis of current methods, approaches, measures and results of intervention studies in occupational therapy. – Decision makers will be able to assess the effectiveness of occupational therapy programs and make strategic investments in occupational therapy to achieve the greatest benefit for their clients. – Occupational therapy managers, institutional administrators, and government funders will find information to support investments in the most effective occupational therapy practices to ensure the maximum occupational performance, health, and well-being for their constituents. "Interventions, Effects, and Outcomes in Occupational Therapy "brings together and evaluates the research and evidence on the effectiveness of occupational therapy. The text will also provide a summary of the strengths and weakness of previous research on the topic, as well as a guide to the most common and appropriate outcome measures in the area. Never before has there been a text that so clearly assembles the evidence for the effectiveness of occupational therapy. |

In the River They Swim $11.99 The sociologist Thomas Sowell writes, "We need to confront the most blatant fact that has persisted across centuries of social history—vast ddifferences in productivity among peoples, and the economic and other consequences of such differences." Poverty demeans dignity, shrinks the soul, wastes potential, and inflicts suffering on three billion people on our planet. We must also acknowledge that, during the past fifty yyears, the record in international assistance to the least developed countries has been disappointing; the economics-based abstractions developed in the think tanks of Europe and North America are insufficient. In the River They Swim is the antithesis to that search for solutions the next big theory of global poverty. From the fresh perspective of advisors on the frontlines of development to the insight of leaders like President Paul Kagame of Rwanda and Pastor Rick Warren, it tells the story of change in the microcosms of emerging businesses, industries, and governments. These essays display a personal nature to their work that rigorous analysis alone cannot explain. We learn that a Sufi master can teach us about the different levels of knowledge, the "different ways to know a river." These practitioners could have written about its length, its source, its depth, its width, the power of its current, and the life it contains. They could have invested time and money to travel to that river so that they could sit on its shores and look at it, feel the sand that borders it, and watch the birds at play over it. Instead, they dove in to swim in the river, felt its current along their bodies, and tasted something of it. They wondered, briefly, if they had the strength to swim its length, and now they share the answer. If human development is a river, the authors in this volume, and perhaps some readers, will no longer be satisfied to stand along its banks. |
