Best Animated Movies of 2009
One of the biggest categories of the end of the year awards season is the pick for the best animated movie of the year. This year saw a great selection of animated movies, from the kid friendly fare of “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs” to the requisite Pixar masterpiece, “Up” to the return of Japan’s always creative “Hayao Miyazaki. Oh, and did I mention Wes Anderson directed an animated/stop motion film called “Fantastic Mr. Fox”? There are lots of choices, but here are my picks for the top three animated movies of the year, so turn down the hid lights and settle in for a ride…
Coraline
Based on the Neil Gaiman novel, Coraline is a dark, horror/fantasy film that will appeal to kids and adults alike. The visual effects of Coraline are stunning, but it is Gaiman’s story that will really hook you and is what sets “Coraline” apart from the other films. There is a dark mysteriousness to “Coraline” that makes it such a wonderful, inspiring film.
Up
Pixar has done it again. Really, can these guys do anything wrong? This unanimously praised computer animated film by the Pixar studio was unanimously praised by critics and is almost a shoe-in for the best animated film Oscar. Critics praised the film for its beauty and poetic wisdom in the story of an old man, a boy and a floating house. It is a tale that transcends any age and will be appreciated for years to come.
Ponyo
You have got to hand it to Hayao Miyazaki—he has his style and he is sticking to it, to wonderful effect. With all the stars coming out, literally begging to do the English voice over work for his films, you can expect only the best work from Cate Blanchette, Matt Damon, Tina Fey, and the always wonderful Liam Neeson. “Ponyo” is another classic in Miyazaki’s oeuvre and is both a wonderfully whimsical journey and an emotional ride.

In the Movies $11.18 Since Priority’s 2003 compilation Greatest Hits grabbed some of the most important tracks this West Coast G gave to soundtracks, their 2007 Ice Cube collection In the Movies isn’t the grand discography helper it could have been. It’s best for the faithful fans who bought all the albums but not all the soundtracks Cube landed on or those who don’t mind a little redundancy as long as they get to take a nostalgic ride back to the ’90s when the hip-hop soundtrack was king. Tracks from Murder Was the Case (“Natural Born Killaz”), Boyz N the Hood (“How to Survive in South Central”), I Got the Hook Up (“Ghetto Vet”), The Players Club (“‘We Be Clubbin’”), and Friday (“Friday”) prove Cube was on the best of them, often with the soundtrack’s key cut. The rest of the set is more archival than vital, but there’s nothing here that suggests the rapper was taking the Hollywood money and running. Even the low point — “Right Here, Right Now,” the collaboration with dance producer Paul Oakenfold for the Blade 2 soundtrack — deserves a C+, and while including the 1991 track “The Wrong Nigga to Fuck Wit” on the collection because it landed in the 2001 film Scary Movie 2 seems like cheating, it is an amazing cut. ~ David Jeffries, Rovi Performers: Mack 10 – Vocals (Background) |

The Animation Pimp $24.99 For five years, Chris Robinson wrote a monthly column for Animation World Network (AWN) called The Animation Pimp. Although it began as a way for Robinson to let off steam in his role as director of one of the world's largest animation festivals, the column quickly gained a cult following and just as quickly became a platform for the author's frank, provocative, and frequently very funny musings on the world of animation and his own life. The Animation Pimp collects the best of these pieces, which range from the nuts and bolts of running a festival to sex, death, superheroes, aesthetics, and the living dead. Robinson's unhinged prose is accompanied by some eighty drawings by the award-winning German artist and animator Andreas Hykade. In the spirit of Hunter Thompson, Nick Tosches, and Richard Meltzer, The Animation Pimp is an outrageous, funny, and ultimately truthful account of the chaos and glimmers of illumination in an art form and a life. The Animation Pimp is the first in a series of official guides published in collaboration with AWN Press. Each book covers major facets of the animation industry and offers a one-of-a-kind look into the careers of industry icons. |
